Good skin care and sun protection can help delay the skin’s aging process and prevent sun damage and skin cancer. Here are three tips to keep your skin looking healthy:
1) Protect from the Sun
Over a lifetime, sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen like Elta MD with an SPF of at least 30. Seek the shade and avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest. Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats.
2) Don’t smoke
Smoking ages your skin and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin which then causes your skin to lose its strength and elasticity. If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit.
3) Treat your skin gently
Limit bath time. Hot water and long showers or baths dry out your skin and contribute to eczema. Limit your shower, and use warm water. Avoid strong soaps. Choose mild cleansers that don’t strip oil from your skin. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin and then use a moisturizer.
