As our skin matures and ages, the incidence of skin problems tends to increase.  Our dermatologists in Ballantyne and Indian Trail, Dr. Seward, Dr. Grattan, and Dr. LaRocque are trained to treat the several skin conditions and tumors, such as skin cancer, that are more common in older adults.

As we age, the outer layer of the skin, or epidermis, does not recover from injury as rapidly.   Because it loses lipids and water content, the epidermis dries out more easily and becomes more prone to infection. The second layer of the skin, or dermis, loses collagen and elastic tissues that help protect against injury.  As a result, many patients will bruise more easily.  Due to a decrease in the amount of sweat glands, it is also more difficult for the body to cool off on a hot day.

Skin Care Tips for Aging Skin:

  • Because the skin is drier, bathing isn’t typically needed as often.
  • Short showers and avoidance of very hot water is recommended.
  • Gentle non-soap cleansers (like Cetaphil or CeraVe), combined with a moisturizer with lipids after bathing is recommended.
  • Daily sunscreen and proper sun protection, including a hat and sunglasses.
  • Perform a monthly self skin exam to examine for changing moles and new growths
  • Frequent skin cancer screenings by one of our dermatologists.
