Sun spots, also known as solar lentigos, are brown spots or patches of the skin which are irregular and darker than the normal skin tone.  They are typically seen in areas of sun damage such as the face, shoulders, arms, and hands.  They can sometimes be confused for age spots (seborrheic keratoses); however, sun spots occur when the skin attempts to protect itself against exposure to the sun’s damaging UV rays.  Treatment to help lighten and diminish sun spots includes daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen, fade creams such as: Obagi Clear and Tretinoin and Refissa,  liquid nitrogen cryotherapy, and sometimes laser treatments.
