Unfortunately, there are many causes that result in hair loss in men and women.  A dermatologist is specially trained in diagnosing and treating disease of the hair follicle and will evaluate a patient’s hair loss by inquiring about diet, medications, family history, and recent illness.  Hair loss can also be affected by many factors including hormonal effects, medical conditions, and hair care habits.  Some of the common causes of excessive hair loss are:

  • Alopecia areata
  • Androgenetic alopecia (hereditary thinning)
  • Improper hair care
  • Childbirth
  • Birth control pills
  • Thyroid disease
  • Low iron
  • Medications
  • Medical illness or surgery
  • Severe infections, such as fungal infections (Ringworm of the Scalp)
  • Cancer treatments (chemotherapy)
