dcc-Lichen-PlanusLichen planus is a skin condition characterized by an itchy rash on the skin or in the mouth. It may occasionally occur on the scalp, genitals, or nails.  It is sometimes mistaken for psoriasis or eczema.  The rash of lichen planus is characterized by purplish, polygonal itchy bumps on the skin that sometimes have a fine, white scale. When occurring in the mouth, it can sometimes be erosive and uncomfortable.  Its cause is unknown, although sometimes it may be associated with certain medications and diseases. Treatment of lichen planus may include:

 

  • oral and topical steroids
  • oral retinoids
  • immunosuppressant medicatons
  • hydroxychloroquine
  • tacrolimus
  • dapsone
